The Consult Is a Conversation. No Commitment Required.

Your first appointment starts with a free consultation—an honest conversation about your hair, your skin, your goals, and your timeline. We look at the area you want treated, ask about your removal history (shaving, waxing, laser), and discuss any hormonal factors if relevant. We then map a realistic protocol: how many sessions, at what cadence, and roughly what results look like at different stages. Nothing is started until you’re ready. No upsell, no pressure.

What Actually Happens When the Treatment Starts—Step by Step.

If you’re ready to treat at your first visit, we start the same day. The area is cleaned, and a fine, sterile probe is inserted into the first follicle. A controlled pulse of heat is delivered to the growth center—you’ll feel a brief warmth or pinch—and the hair releases. We repeat this follicle by follicle, recalibrating energy as we go. Sessions are sized to what the skin can handle, not pushed to maximum coverage.

Electrolysis working on all hair colors and skin tones — permanent hair removal

The Prep List Is Short. Here’s Everything That Actually Matters.

Let hair grow to a visible length—stop waxing and plucking at least two to four weeks before. Shaving is fine up until four days before your session. Come in with clean skin and no product on the treatment area. Avoid retinoids, strong acids, or sensitizing actives for two days beforehand. If you’re taking any medications that affect skin sensitivity or healing, mention it at your consult. That’s it.

FDA-recognized electrolysis as the only method for permanent hair removal

What Your Skin Looks Like After—and What’s Normal.

Mild redness and small swelling around treated follicles are the normal inflammatory response and settle within a few hours for most clients. Avoid heat, heavy sweating, and active skincare products on the treated area for one day. Don’t pick at treated follicles. Keep it clean and simple. Plan your first few sessions around your social calendar until you know exactly how your skin responds—most clients find their response is milder than they expected.

WHO IS ELECTROLYSIS FOR?

Here’s when electrolysis may be right for you—and when it’s better to wait.

Great if you…
  • Prioritize permanence. Done with “reduction” and temporary maintenance. You want the hair gone—forever.
  • Have “laser leftovers.” Patchy regrowth, stubborn stragglers that other methods couldn’t finish.
  • Have light hair. Blonde, gray, red, white, fine—hair laser can’t see.
  • Have melanin-rich skin. Electrolysis targets the follicle, not pigment. Safe for all skin tones.
  • Are battling hormonal growth. PCOS, menopause, genetics—we break the cycle.
Consult your clinician first if you’re on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
Hold off if you…
  • Have active cold sores or infections. Treatment area needs to fully heal first.
  • Are taking Accutane/Isotretinoin. We require 6–12 months after stopping.
  • Have a fresh sunburn. Skin needs to cool and repair first.
  • Have keloids. Patch test + 4-week wait required.

YOUR QUESTIONS, OUR ANSWERS

  • Is the consultation really free, and what does the 50% off first session cover?

Yes—the consultation is free, no obligation. We look at the area, discuss your goals and hair profile, and map a realistic protocol. If you decide to treat on the same visit, your first session is fifty percent off the standard rate. That discount applies to a single treatment session. Electrolysis starts at thirty dollars per session; the first session discount is applied at booking. See the pricing page or ask at your consult for a session estimate based on your specific zone and scope.

    Concierge Note:
The consultation is diagnostic, not a sales pitch. We’d rather give you an honest timeline and have you start with accurate expectations than book you on optimism. Most clients leave with a clearer picture of the protocol than they arrived with—and a better sense of whether the commitment makes sense for their life right now. That’s the point of the conversation.

  • Can I treat at my first visit, or is the consultation a separate appointment?

You can treat at your first visit if you’re ready and the skin is prepared. Many clients do—the consult takes about fifteen minutes, and if it makes sense to start that day, we begin the same session. The main requirement is that hair is present in the follicle: no waxing or plucking for at least two weeks before. If you haven’t prepped, we use the first visit as consultation only and schedule your first treatment session from there.

    Concierge Note:
Most clients who’ve prepped in advance find it efficient to treat at the first visit—you’ve already made the appointment, the conversation is done, and the momentum helps. If you’re not sure whether you’ve prepped correctly, book the consult and we’ll assess on the day. Either way, nothing is rushed, and the first session is on your terms.

  • How long is a typical session?

Session length depends on the zone and how much we’re addressing in one sitting. Short precision zones—ears, upper lip, a specific brow area—can run fifteen to thirty minutes. Larger body zones—back, legs, full beard—may run sixty minutes or more. For new clients, we typically start with a shorter session to assess your skin’s response before committing to longer treatment blocks. The goal is consistent sessions your skin can recover from, not maximum coverage in one go.

    Concierge Note:
We don’t push volume in early sessions. A thirty-minute session done consistently produces better results than a ninety-minute session that leaves the skin reactive for two weeks. Pacing is part of the protocol—and your first session is as much about calibrating to your skin as it is about clearing follicles. We build from there.

  • Do I need to shave before my appointment?

Stop shaving four days before your session so there’s enough hair length for the probe to locate the follicle. Don’t pluck or wax—the hair needs to be present in the follicle to target. If you’ve been waxing regularly, stop at least two weeks out and switch to shaving in the interim. If you arrive with hairs that are too short to target, we’ll treat what we can and adjust for next time. It’s not a reason to cancel.

    Concierge Note:
The between-session routine—shaving instead of plucking, letting hair reach visible length, stopping a few days before—is one of the first things we walk through at the consult. Most clients find it more manageable than they expected once the logic makes sense. The short version: shaving is your friend during treatment. Plucking is not.

  • What if I'm nervous about the pain?

That’s one of the most common concerns we hear—and it’s one of the first things we address at the consult. We distinguish between sensation and pain. You’ll feel heat and a quick pinch at each follicle. The intensity varies by zone, hair depth, and individual sensitivity. We calibrate energy throughout the session and adjust if anything runs hot before the next insertion. Most clients find the reality significantly more manageable than the anticipation. The first session is the proof point.

    Concierge Note:
If pain concern has been keeping you from booking, the consult is specifically the place to talk about it—before anything starts. We can discuss topical numbing options, session pacing, and which zones tend to run easier. Most clients find that once they’ve had one session, the anticipation loses its grip. See our Pain & Sensation Guide for the full breakdown before your visit.

  • How many sessions will I need before I see results?

Most clients see visible reduction after the first few consistent sessions—follicles that were treated in earlier sessions stop producing hair, and the density in the treated zone drops. The number of sessions to complete a zone depends on hair density, zone size, and whether any hormonal driver is activating new follicles during the protocol. A realistic session estimate for your specific zone and goals is what the consult is for. We don’t give generic numbers; we give estimates based on what we actually observe.

    Concierge Note:
The honest answer is: earlier than most people expect, and longer than the optimistic version. Meaningful density reduction typically happens within the first consistent months of treatment. Full clearance of a zone depends on follicle count and hormonal factors. We’d rather scope this accurately at the consult than tell you what you want to hear. Book your Nios consult at any of our Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or Union Square locations and we’ll give you a realistic picture.

How Much Time Do I Need?

Electrolysis is billed by time, not body part, since every client’s hair density and treatment area are different.

  • Small areas

Lip, chin, eyebrows, fingers: ~5–30 minutes

  • Medium areas

    Underarms, bikini: ~30–60 minutes

  • Large areas

Legs, chest, back, etc.: 60 to 120+ minutes

The exact timing varies from person to person — for example, underarms may take 30 minutes for one client and a full hour or more for another.

How many sessions do I need?

Hair grows in cycles—only active follicles can be treated, so multiple sessions are required. Most clients achieve permanent results within 12–18 months: twice a month at first, then monthly as hair thins.
